Job description
This project is part of an ERC* (European Research Council) project funded by the European Union, The project is based at the University of Groningen, but involves field work in Finland, Germany, the UK and The Netherlands. It will involve interviews to record the experiences of posted migrants and ‘native’ workers who work with them, and as well as interviews of managers, union officials, and policy makers. There will also be a series of policy interviews aimed at understanding the political/legal changes taking place in the European Union, associated with changes in the sovereignty norm.

The postdoctoral researcher will travel extensively and conduct semi- and unstructured interviews of workers, trade unionists, managers and policy makers. He or she will be expected to make an intellectual contribution to the development of the research project, to publish research articles as part of the research team, and to help train and direct the teams junior members (graduate and undergraduate) in their research.

Starting date: preferably January 1st, 2011.

Requirements
- PhD degree (or near completion) PhD dissertation research in an area such as migration, migrant work, trade union strategy, transnational subcontracting and agency work, EU politics or something similar
- at least published in peer reviewed venue(s)
- Fluency in English, ability to converse in the language of one or more of the field work countries, and/or in Eastern European language(s), is highly desirable
- organizational qualities and good communication skills
- willingness to work as part of a research team.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary, according to university standards in the Netherlands, depending on research experience and qualifications and ranges between 3,195 and 4,374 gross per month for a full-time position. In addition, there are a 8% holiday allowance and a 8,3% end of year bonus. The position is initially offered for a two year period.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) invites expressions of interest from graduates with evidence of academic excellence, research ability, and good communication, interpersonal and leadership abilities for full-time PhD study within a newly launched Fellowship scheme. The scheme aims to recruit outstanding graduates, irrespective of country of origin and ethnic background, to Hong Kong, and will provide a 3-year tuition scholarship, a monthly stipend of HK$20,000 (approximately US$2,600) and Conference and Research related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year for awardees for a maximum period of three years.
